1. Pick the spot with the best view and build your dream garden from there.

2. Use colourful, eye-catching planters to create a focal point and offer distraction.

3. Wall off the outside world with evergreen shrubs such as bamboos or Portuguese laurel Prunus lusitanica.

4. Plant slow-growing trees with character, including Japanese maples and mountain pines or scented flowers or herbs such

as lavender or thyme.

5. Keep furniture to a minimum— visibly light sofas or benches instead of multiple chairs.
